Those rumours won’t go away. The latest, as seen on GigaOM, suggest that Google are already busy with the development of their own metaverse while a company in China develops avatars for them.Second Life by Google seems like exactly the kind of thing they would do. They have the financial and computing clout to create something to rival the experience of the web.
The big problem for me with Second Life is the inability for people to create their own worlds within worlds, possibly hosted on their own environments. The web works because you’re not buying a piece of real-estate to put your site on, you are simply joining the network and adding to the size of what’s there already. It will be interesting to see how Google’s model works.
Did Neal Stephenson have any idea what he was starting in 1992?
